CAR OF THE YEAR TOP 50

No. 14: Fiat Punto

In the 1990s, Fiat was in a very different position than it is today. In 1993 and 1994 the brand introduced the successor to the very successful Uno in Europe: the Punto, also designed by Giugiaro. In 1995, the Punto, which was one of the trendsetters with its high taillights, was named Car of the Year. Fiat thus set a record: three generations in a row (127, Uno, Punto) received that title. That had never happened before, and also never has again since 1995. At the moment there is also no brand that could match that record in the next five years. Unfortunately, the times of success in the B-segment are now completely over for Fiat, which does not even build a descendant of the Punto anymore. There appears to be a new hatchback in the pipeline, but the chances of it becoming Europe's best-selling car like the Punto was in 1997 are slim – at least as long as SUVs continue to gain popularity.
