CAR OF THE YEAR TOP 50
No. 07: Ford Sierra
Cars
| 02-01-2022
Imagine this: you come up with a groundbreaking design that would have won the Car of the Year title in 51 out of 57 years and still you come in second. It happened to the team at Ford that had worked on the Sierra. This makes the Sierra the number two with the highest rank in this Top 50. The aerodynamic appearance of the Sierra was innovative and resulted in a drag coefficient (Cw) of only 0.34 (against 0.42 for a Lamborghini Countach, to name one, for instance). This naturally had a beneficial effect on fuel consumption. However, the 'blob shape' was also a risk in a segment with a generally fairly conservative clientele. Fortunately for Ford, that clientele got used to it after a while and the Sierra, despite the outdated technology, became a sales success.
