The low drag of the Ford Sierra was sensational in 1982, but what Audi achieved was even more exceptional. Despite a more traditional appearance, the Audi 100 had an even lower Cw value than the Sierra: only 0.30. The 100 also had a technical lead over the Ford. The model is therefore seen as the beginning of Audi (at the time officially still Audi NSU Auto Union AG) as a premium brand, partly due to the greatly improved build quality. Within the Car of the Year election, the brand from Ingolstadt has never done better than in 1983: the 100 is the only Audi in the Top 50, in which BMW and Mercedes-Benz are not included at all, for that matter.
