With the Fiat 500 I already wrote that the best scoring Italian car in this Top 50 can be found with the best three. A top 3 that consists entirely of sedans, by the way. That Italian car is not a Fiat, not a Lancia, but this Alfa Romeo 156. No fewer than 40 of the 56 judges gave the 156 the maximum number of points. In total, the Alfa received 454 points, 188 more than the number two at the Car of the Year 1998, the Volkswagen Golf. The 156 drove wonderfully, it had good engines, but above all it was a beautiful car, with just the right mix between heritage and contemporary design. A real Alfa Romeo, so to speak. Even now, 25 years later, it is still a feast for the eyes.
